Over time, the curriculum's popularity grew. Today, selections of the Delphi Program curriculum are available for use as supplementary resources for schools, homeschoolers, teachers, tutors, parents, guardians, children, teens, and businesses around the world.
OVERVIEW
My First Books were written to fill a need in teaching young beginners very, very simple materials—ones that start slowly and progress step by tiny step. Each little step helps draw a child, slowly and comfortably, into the exciting world of reading.
Through My First Books, a child learns the connection between written words and their meanings. They learn to read very simple but meaningful text, starting with single words that gradually build into short phrases, sentences, and simple stories. Simultaneously, they are introduced to letter sounds.
A child completing the set of fully illustrated books and workbooks will have a reading vocabulary of roughly 60 words along with an understanding of plurals and possessives, all for use in reading simple sentences and stories. They will know the joy of reading and be ready for more.
They will, in short, be off to a great start in reading!
WHAT'S IN THE BOX
Book 1: This book is the first in a set of 20 very short, vocabulary-controlled books for very beginning readers. This book introduces five words only; more are introduced in each book of the series.
Book 2: This book introduces five color words, then pairs them with the words used in Book 1. Coordinates with Workbook 2.
Book 3: This book introduces the possessive form of names the reader has already learned in Book 1. Coordinates with Workbook 2.
Book 4: This book introduces the words a, bike, car, hat, pants, dress, shoes, jacket, and hat, then combines these into very short phrases (ex: "a hat," "shoes, and pants"). Coordinates with Workbook 2.
Book 5: This book does not introduce new vocabulary but provides a review of all vocabulary learned so far. It also introduces a student to a number of 5-word phrases, such as "a ball and a hat.". Coordinates with Workbook 3.
Book 6: This book introduces the words Coco, Coco's, Zak, Zak's, and my. It also introduces the student to a number of 6- and 7-word phrases, such as "my brown shoes and my green hat.". Coordinates with Workbook 3.
Book 7: This book introduces the plural forms of nouns already learned and provides good practice reading both singular and plural forms of these words. Coordinates with Workbook 3.
Book 8: This book introduces the words one, two, and three. The text builds on all skills learned thus far. Coordinates with Workbook 3.
Book 9: This book introduces the words Mommy, Daddy, Mommy's, and Daddy's. The text utilizes these words and builds on all skills learned thus far. Coordinates with Workbook 4.
Book 10: This book introduces no new words but introduces longer 8- and 9-word phrases that utilize the vocabulary and build on all the other skills learned thus far. Coordinates with Workbook 4.
Book 11: This book introduces the verbs draw, see, make, help, and read. It moves to full sentences of text (rather than simple phrases), building on all the other skills learned thus far. Coordinates with Workbook 4.
Book 12: This book introduces the verbs run, play, work, come, and jump and contains full sentences of text building on all the other skills learned thus far. Coordinates with Workbook 4.
Book 13: This book reviews words and sentence structure already learned with some longer sentences. Its full sentences of text build on all the other skills learned thus far. Coordinates with Workbook 5.
Book 14: This book introduces the words boy, girl, come, is, letter, to, and school. It is a short story consisting of full sentences of text that build on all the other skills learned thus far. Coordinates with Workbook 5.
Book 15: This book introduces the words boy, girl, come, is, letter, to, and school. It is a short story consisting of full sentences of text that build on all the other skills learned thus far. Coordinates with Workbook 5.
Book 16: This book introduces the words the, can, little, and big and builds on all the other skills learned thus far. Coordinates with Workbook 5.
Book 17: This book is a review of sorts, a short descriptive story consisting of full sentences of text that build on all the other vocabulary and skills learned thus far. Coordinates with Workbook 6.
Book 18: This book introduces the words boys, girls, letters, in and go, and tells a short descriptive story consisting of full sentences of text that build on all the other vocabulary and skills learned thus far. Coordinates with Workbook 6.
Book 19: This book introduces the words I, have, and you and we and tells a short descriptive story about the two main characters of the book, consisting of full sentences of text that build on all the other vocabulary and skills learned thus far. Coordinates with Workbook 6.
Book 20: This book introduces the word in and tells a short descriptive story about a brother and sister, consisting of full sentences of text that build on all the other vocabulary and skills learned thus far. Coordinates with Workbook 6.
WORKBOOKS
Workbook 1: This workbook is designed to be used with Set 1, Book (titled Book 1). It builds reading skills by providing vocabulary practice, familiarization with letter formations B and b, and some practice with beginning sound.
Workbook 2: This workbook is the second in a series of 6 workbooks that go with the re-illustrated third edition of My First Books, Set 1. This workbook coordinates with books 2-4, providing extra practice with all the vocabulary learned thus far, practice recognizing letters C and c, and recognizing words that start with c.
Workbook 3: This workbook is the third in a series of 6 workbooks that go with the re-illustrated My First Books, Set 1. It coordinates with Books 5-8, building on earlier skills and providing extra practice with the vocabulary learned in all 8 books thus far (including plurals and possessive forms), practicing recognizing the letters H and h and words that begin with h.
Workbook 4: This workbook is the 4th in the series of 6 workbooks that go with the re-illustrated third edition of My First Books, Set 1. It coordinates with Books 9-12, providing extra practice with all the vocabulary learned thus far, practice recognizing the letters M and m and differentiating beginning sounds b, c, h and m. This workbook also gently introduces simple reasoning skills.
Workbook 5: This is the fifth in the series of 6 workbooks designed to go with the re-illustrated My First Books, Set 1. It coordinates with Books 13-16, providing extra practice with all the vocabulary learned thus far, practicing recognition of the letters S and s, differentiating beginning sounds b, m, and s, and early practice with reasoning skills.
Workbook 6: This workbook is the 6th (and final) workbook in the series that goes with the re-illustrated third edition of My First Books, Set 1. It coordinates with Books 17-20, providing extra practice with all the vocabulary learned thus far, practice recognizing G and g and differentiating beginning sounds b, g, h, m, and s. This workbook contains several activities that promote observation and reasoning skills.
