This is a comprehensive glossary of the culture, customs and language of early 1900 Yorkshire, England as represented in The Secret Garden, written by Frances Hodgson Burnett. There are over 400 entries for English words, slang words, Yorkshire dialect, medical terms, gardening terms and more that can’t commonly be found in an elementary student’s dictionary. To accommodate the different editions of The Secret Garden, words are listed by chapter in the order they appear in the book with an alphabetical index in the back. Also included is a brief essay regarding the Yorkshire dialect to assist readers with Burnett’s extensive use of this expressive form of speech.
