Product Description

In this course the music student is introduced to the orchestra.

He learns about the four families of the orchestra and the instruments that are in each family. The student gets to build his own string instrument, a box harp made out of a cardboard box.

Also included in the course are the fundamentals of music note reading, so by the end of the course the student can write music for his box harp, and then play it.

Materials You Need to Supply: Sturdy cardboard box such as a shoe box (for building a box harp), 2 feet of dental floss or thin string, 2 inch wide tape, scissors, pen that has a clip, metronome with audible sound, painting materials.  Access to some of the instruments in an orchestra, particularly members of the string family.  If the school doesn't have such instruments, a visit to a local music store that does will need to be arranged.  Any classical recording of an orchestra piece of music, such as Beethoven or Brahms; a recording of Samuel Barber's "Adagio for Strings."  Jive Aces' CD Bolt from the Blue, available from Amazon.com or Bridge Publications, Inc., 4751 Fountain Ave., Los Angeles, CA  90029, 800-722-1733, 323-664-6007.
